Where clothing once was developed strictly for the purpose of survival some hundreds of thousands of years ago, these days clothing is regarded as almost entirely in terms of cultural fashion, as opposed to practical application.

Aside from footwear and outerwear, very little clothing is developed anymore with the primary emphasis on anything but aesthetic appeal. On the other hand, one article of clothing has withstood the trend many thousands of years in the making: the apron. You won’t find aprons in a typical clothing store, and wholesale style aprons are the manner in which they’re normally obtained, and yet aprons are one of the most ubiquitous pieces of clothing you’ll find. They’re everywhere. Wholesale aprons can be found on cooks, waiters, waitresses and other food industry employees, as well as nurses, doctors, laboratory personnel, industrial workers, and though much less so today on the stereotypical visage of a housewife or homemaker. Aprons – even wholesale aprons which can be easily disposed of – are developed from the ground up with their practical purpose in mind as protecting supplies. They are basically a wide safety piece of cloth, normally tied around the back by the waist, neck, or both, developed to protect the wearer (and the clothes they wear underneath) from whatever substances they are working with. This can be anything from protecting a waitress from spoiling a good blouse with food stains, to an industrial worker from coming into contact with corrosive and potential unsafe substances and chemicals. There are even aprons sewn with lead to protect patients against the harmful radioactive influences of x-rays to other parts of the body. Most wholesale aprons these days are made of cheap, sturdy materials like cotton to protect clothing against unwanted contact with unsavory (but not necessarily unhygienic) substances. The aforementioned waitress, as well as cooks, busboys, and other service industry personnel will wear aprons merely to avoid sullying their clothing with food or beverages, or any other substances they could come into contact with (cooking oils, or even fire – for an extremely short period – if a cook is grilling or setting up a meal in any other way that may well singe his or her clothing). For industrial purposes, wholesale aprons are frequently eschewed in favor of more specially designed aprons. A scientists or lab technician’s apron will be created and comprised of materials especially manufactured to protect against chemicals or biological contaminants that normal wholesale aprons wouldn’t be enough against. Even in industrial settings so rigorous as a steel mill, workers will often wear aprons made of extremely heavy, protective material to ward off sparks and heat and other things that might damage clothing, or just as likely, the workers themselves. In this capacity, aprons can be seen as a safety garment of sorts, although not quite on the same degree as protective goggles, gloves, or a sturdy helmet.
